General Information
The information contanined on our site is TO BE used as a GUIDE ONLY. We have been raising wolf hybrids for many years and have gained much insight into their natures BUT NO TWO wolf hybrids are the same.
Most wolf hybrids do not digest fruit and vegetables well. So to keep them healthy remember protein only and nothing too spicy. We feed an extremely high protein and high fat dry food (absolutely no SOY or Soy by-products) along with some raw chicken. Chicken is the only meat we feed raw, everything else is cooked. Most wolf hybrids like to chew. Ours love bones, any kind of bones. (WE DO NOT FEED COOKED CHICKEN BONES, THEY CAN SPLINTER AND CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE ANIMALS INTESTINES). I also give them rawhides, natural 100% rawhide only, no spices or flavoring. The bones and rawhide will also give them something to do. Since they are so intelligent they need brain stimulation, like bones, rawhide, sticks and toys to chew on. Our animals absolutely love plastic water bottles. We just throw them in the pen and then go back in a few days and pick up the pieces. They will chew on just about anything you put in there.
Most individuals who have had any experience with wolf hybrids are quick to note the difference between it and domestic dogs they have known. The wolf hybrid's most indispensable personality trait is the ability to exist as part of a group, to form an attachment to others of it's kind or to bond with it's human pack.
Wolves and wolf hybrids are extremely curious and they possess remarkable intelligence. Some experts maintain that they can learn to open gates simply by watching their owners. One of our females can open some doors. So one should never underestimate their problem-solving abilities!
Wolves and wolf hybrids can also be escape artists so containment is an important issue. We advise potential owners on how to build an adequate containment system for their new pup. Wolf hybrids need other companion canines for company, hopefully another wolf hybrid. Without furry friends, wolf hybrids can become unhappy and lonely which can lead to destructive behavior. Wolf hybrids can be trained to live in the house but most owners keep a close eye on their animals in the home to avoid potential disasters like ripped up furniture, shredded plants, and torn clothing or shoes. Many folks that have purchased cubs from us, have taught their friend to be both an inside and outside animal. With patience, motivation and an open mind you can teach your wolf hybrid almost anything.
Wolves are very intelligent creatures whose upright ears, sharp pointed muzzles, inquiring eyes and other facial features instantly convey this quality. Wolves generally weigh between 80 and 100 pounds, with females weighing less than males. An unusual wolf may reach 150 pounds or more. They have slim torsos with narrow chests, long legs with large feet, and large heads with larger teeth and more powerful jaws than those of the dog. Their coat varies with the seasons; it is very thick with a dense undercoat in the winter and sheds to a thinner, shorter haired coat in the summer. Coat color varies from all black to a grizzled gray to all white. The eyes are usually a yellowish golden color or the Tundra wolf may have transulent color (green) eyes.
Wolves and wolf hybrids tend to be wary and timid of humans unless they are socialized to be trusting and friendly at an early age. We have a "birthing room" attached to our home and our with our mothers from the moment they go into labor. We help with the birthing process, if needed. We allow our cubs to remain with their mothers until the mother begins to wean them. Our cubs are played with, held and loved by Butch and I, our son and daughter-in-law, our three grandchildren and any of our friends that come by. We pride ourselves in raising loving and well adjusted animals.
Unlike dogs, wolves and high content wolf hybrids do not reach sexual maturity until they are around two years old. They breed once a year and the gestation period is 63 - 66 days. Wolf pups are born in northern climates as late as early June and in southern climates as early asDecember.
Wolves and wolf hybrids convey much with their bodies. If they are angry, they may stick their ears straight up. If they are suspicious, they may pull their ears back and squint. Fear is often shown by flattening the ears against the head. A wolf or wolf hybrid who wants to play dances and bows playfully.
The sound most people associate with a wolf or a wolf hybrid is the "wolf howl." No two wolves or wolf hybrids howl exactly the same and their vocalizations are primarily a means of communication that can be separated into four categories: barking, whimpering, growling, and howling. Sounds created by the wolf or wolf hybrid may actually be a combination of sounds such as a bark-howl orgrowl-bark.
Barking is used as a warning. A mother may bark to her pups because she senses danger, or a bark or bark-howl may be used to show aggression in defense of the pack or territory.
Whimpering may be used by a mother to indicate her willingness to nurse her young. It is also used to indicate "I give up" if they are in a submissive position and being dominated by another wolf or wolf hybrid.
Growling is used as a warning. A wolf or wolf hybrid may growl at intruding wolves or predators, or to indicate dominance.
Howling is the one form of communication used by wolves and wolf hybrids that is intended for long distance. A defensive howl is used to keep the pack together and strangers away, to stand their ground and protect young pups who cannot yet travel from danger and protect kill sites. A social howl is used to locate one another, rally together and possibly just for fun.
Sometimes I swear they understand every human word being said to them and they try their best to talk back to us. Owning a wolf hybrid is a lifetime commitment. Once they bond with their human pack members, wolf hybrids can be difficult to successfully place when they become adults. Unless a person can make this commitment and are willing to spend several hours a day with their animals, owning a wolf hybrid may not be for you. However, with proper fencing, training, and plenty of love, living with a wolf hybrid is an extremely rewarding experience and we believe one you will never regret!
